Curator: Anastasia Shavlokhova
Szena Berlin is pleased to present That White Stone House on a Mountain, Akhmat Biikanov’s first solo exhibition in Europe.
Informed by his upbringing in Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus, Biikanov creates portraits and tableaux that inhabit a world suspended in time and imbued with a sense of belonging and silence. Working primarily with watercolour and ink, he tries to capture kindred souls exchanging glances full of empathy and delves into the notions of memory, communion and alienation.
That White Stone House on a Mountain marks the inaugural exhibition of Szena Berlin, a new pop-up art project founded by curator Anastasia Shavlokhova. Seeking to explore a multitude of personal narratives through exhibitions and public events, Szena Berlin weaves together voices from diverse geographies and cultural contexts.
